After her father left them when she was just 3 years old, her mother who had remarried suffered severe brain damage in a car accident. At the age of nine, Haddish, the oldest of five siblings became the family’s primary caregiver.

After her mother’s accident,  Haddish’s stepfather told her he had wickedly tampered with the brakes on her mother’s car to kill Haddish, her siblings, and her mother so he could collect their life insurance policies. Luckily, Haddish and her siblings decided to stay home and that decision saved their life.
