Alice was born to her mother, Jane Sebold, and father, Russell P. Sebold.

Dr. Sebold was an internationally renowned professor of Hispanic studies in the 18th and 19th centuries. He was a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Spain, the Real Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Catalonia, and the Hispanic Society of America. 

Russell was the author of 39 volumes of literary criticism and more than 100 academic publications.

He died in West Chester at the age of 86, having complications from a stroke.

Jane had been sober for eleven years by 1977. During these periods, while Russell was abroad for months in Spain, she used to have panic attacks. Alice and her older sister Mary worked as a caretaking unit for their mother when they were younger.

Russell’s promotion finally moved his family to Paoli, Pennsylvania, to teach at The University of Pennsylvania.

Alice was very creative, and she always wanted to be a writer. On the other hand, her parents focused all their attention and admiration on Mary, who was very good at her studies.

In 1980, Sebold graduated from Malvern, Pennsylvania’s Great Valley High School. She went on to Syracuse University to complete her bachelor’s degree.

She went to the University of Houston in Texas after graduating in 1984, then relocated to Manhattan for the next ten years. While pursuing a writing career, she also worked as a waitress.

In 1998, Alice obtained a degree of Masters in Fine Arts from the University of California, Irvine.
