Sostak attended the University of Notre Dame, where he met guitarist Chris Daly while on the rise in the music business. From 1993 to 1994, they both had appearances in Check Engine. Later, they relocated to Chicago, where with the aid of bassist Matt Alicea and drummer Scott Anna, they formed Sweep The Leg Johnny.
