Pittsburg Pirates drafted him in the 31st round of the 2004 MLB draft, but he refused to sign, instead played college baseball at College of Charleston. Then in the sixth round of the 2007 MLB draft, St. Louis Cardinals drafted him.

His Minor League Baseball career began with the affiliate teams of the Cardinals, which finished in 2010 after three years of playing. And now, reports suggest that the Cardinals will announce Oliver as its next manager during a press conference today.
