Mark Ibanez KTVU

Mark began his professional broadcasting career at KXTV Channel Ten, a CBS affiliate in 1978 in Sacramento and after a little, over a year he got a call from the news director at KTVU Channel 2.

Mark had been on vacation in Lake Tahoe and had seen him at Sacramento station while he was up there. They met for lunch on his way back to the Bay Area and he offered him the weekend sports anchor job at KTVU within a week.

That was in 1979, and here it’s more than 39 years later, and Mark is still working on a job he loves and covering all the teams he grew up following. He would actually go so far as to say. All the teams with which he grew up living and dying. He takes sports seriously, but when his team loses, he doesn’t freak out and throw tantrum. Not at least anymore.

In 1987, Mark was named Sports Director. When the NFL moved to Fox, he became the anchor of the highly-rated pre-game “49er Playbook” and “The Point After” postgame show.

He never wanted to work in any other station or in any other city. He had been able to cover numerous Super Bowls, World Series, and visit most of the country’s sports venues. I saw Dwight Clark making “The Catch” for the 49ers. I was perhaps twenty feet away from him when it happened.

Moreover, Ibanez has been with the KTVU Channel 2 Sports Department for over 40 years as of 2019, making him the longest-running sports reporter and anchor in the Bay Area which is equal in length to that of former KTVU Anchorman Dennis Richmond.

Mark is an award-winning member of the Silver Circle Bay Area Broadcasters. Mark was awarded 4 Emmys and 16 nominations for the Emmy award.

A 1994 best-selling book entitled “Mark’s Remarks” was among his most proud accomplishments. All the proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society.

Mark Ibanez Baseball

Ibanez remembers that his mom couldn’t even get him to play Little League baseball when he was a kid. Ibanez was far more interested in rock music and learning to play the drums. His life changed shortly after getting a paper route for the Marin Journal in San Rafael when he was about 11-years-old, Ibanez won a trip with a large group of his fellow paperboys to go to a Giants game at Candlestick Park.

Ibanez was drawn to everything he experienced that night, but particularly Willie Mays. He had never seen anyone throw a ball so far with seemingly so little effort. Mays became his hero and the biggest reason sports have become his life.

Ibanez wanted to become a Major League baseball player, but he later realized that was a longshot and figured the next best thing would be to become a baseball announcer or some kind of sports broadcaster. He was that kid who borrowed his dad’s tape recorder, turned down the volume of the games on television, and did his own play by play.
