Our thoughts and prayers are with Maria of ABC 6/ FOX 28 and anyone else who’s in the fight against cancer. According to FOX 28, women from across Central Ohio gathered for a special fundraising event Saturday, providing help and love to those who need it most. Among those honored at the Women’s Empowerment Fundraising Luncheon and Fashion Show was Durant.

How did you find out you had breast cancer?

No story is typical, but Laurie Dixon’s sounds familiar. During a routine check-up, her doctor discovered a lump in her breast–one missed by a mammogram. She admitted she was annoyed at having to take further tests. “It was supposed to be a routine thing. I really thought it was a waste of time. I got the news a few days before my husband’s birthday.”

What were your first thoughts after being diagnosed?

“I was really calm,” Dixon said. “Maybe I was in shock, but my first thoughts went to my son. He was in high school and I thought, ‘Boy, this is not what he needs right now.’ I went on autopilot. As a parent, my first concern was him.”

What advice would you give moms with breast cancer who have to break the news to their children?

Lenora Barnes-Wright’s daughter was a junior in college at the time of her diagnosis. Barnes-Wright and her ex-husband Willie Wright sat down with their daughter and broke the news. “The important thing is that your child knows you still love her and are still there for her,” Barnes-Wright said.

She also advised parents to be sure to have another adult around to take on more of the daily household responsibilities so the child isn’t forced to become the adult if the parent is too sick. Barnes-Wright created a network of support around her daughter while she was away at school. She made sure there were other women who could reach out to her daughter if she ever needed to talk.

Maria Durant Surgery

Back in May, Maria announced on ABC 6/FOX 28 a regular checkup found her breast cancer had returned. She’s been taking time off from ABC 6/FOX 28 after mastectomy surgery. She first beat the disease a little more than 12 years ago and has been an advocate for early detection.

While being honored at the luncheon, she once again stressed the importance of getting regular checks up and appropriate exams. “It’s that early detection – that’s why I’m here,” she told the crowd. “My cancer didn’t spread.”

Maria Durant Education

A graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science little did Maria know she would someday become a news story herself.

Maria Durant Awards

She has also received numerous Associated Press Awards and has been honored with several awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Maria Durant Early Life

She says she’s always wanted to be a reporter. When she was a little girl she used to go around the neighborhood interviewing her neighbors. Then she’d send the tape to her grandparents so they could see where they lived. As the daughter of a Military Naval Officer the family moved often… so there were plenty of tapes mailed out.

Cancer

She says she feels very privileged to be able to tell stories and to keep viewers informed about what is happening in their community.

In October of 2006, Maria was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. But instead of hiding her diagnosis, Durant decided to share her story in hopes of helping others.

Durant is involved with several cancer organizations … and as a Filipino she especially wants young Asian American Women to know that it can happen to them. But that early detection is the key.

She is also involved with many other community organizations such as the Asian Festival, The Columbus International Program, and The National Kidney Foundation,
