Jidenna Theodore Mobisson was born on May 4, 1985 in Wisconsin, Rapids. He is the last of 4 children born to his parents. He started writing music at a young age. He spent his early childhood in Nigeria where his father worked as a university lecturer in Enugu State.

His family relocated to Milton, Massachusetts, in the United States, after a failed kidnapping attempt in 1995, his mother was harassed, beaten, and members of his family were taken hostage. Young Jidenna received his primary education at Justine Thomas Kindergarten and Primary School in Enugu, Nigeria.

After moving to the United States, he formed a rap group called Schwarzer Spadez. Along with his high school friends at Milton Academy, he then began writing, arranging, and producing rap music.
