Larry Wayne Gatlin was born on May 2, 1948, in Seminole, Texas, the United States to parents Curley Gatlin and Billie Gatlin. His father was an oilfield worker. He has three siblings including Rudy Gatlin, Steve Gatlin, LaDonna Gatlin

Larry Gatlin was a quarterback at Odessa High School where he graduated in 1966. He went on to attend the University of Houston and was a wide receiver on the football team. He rose to prominence as part of a trio with his younger brothers Steve and Rudy. The band became known as Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.

Larry Gatlin is best recognized for songs he wrote and recorded in the 1970s and 1980s. Notable among his hit records include “Broken Lady”, “All the Gold in California”, “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer to You)”, “She Used to Be Somebody’s Baby”, and “Night Time Magic”.
