Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Allison Janney grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and graduated from Kenyon College. At the suggestion of one of her teachers, famed actor Paul Newman, she continued to pursue a career in performance after college. She attended both the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She began her professional career appearing in small roles on television and film, in such productions as, “Who Shot Patakango”, “Morton & Hayes”, “Guiding Light”, and “Law & Order”.
Throughout the 90s, she went back and forth between film and television roles, until she was cast in the role that would make her a household name, as C.J. Gregg on “The West Wing”. She went on to win four Emmy Awards for her work on the show. She appeared in 145 of the show’s 156 episodes. She has had a number of notable film roles post-West Wing, including the 2011 movie “The Help”, the 2015 movie “Minions” and the 2017 movie “I, Tonya”.
